Are you having any fun?

Tony Bennett sings,

“ Are you havin’ any fun?

What y’gettin’ out o’ livin’?

What good is what you’ve got

If you’re not havin’ any fun?”

I heard this song the other day and it caused me to stop and reflect on how I have been spending my time lately. It is so easy to get into a routine. Go to work, come home, sit in front of the TV and go to bed. The weekends are full of chores: clean the house, cut the grass and pay the bills. WHERE IS THE FUN?

I am not talking about spending a ton of money to go to Disneyland or spending outside your budget on a night on the town. Why can’t I simply sit down with my husband to watch a good comedy on NETFLIX?   Or, go out and watch our local team play hockey. Or, take a car ride in the country.

The reality is, like everything else, having fun takes time. Having fun takes planning. Or does it? Can I not be spontaneous and announce to my family we are going bowling tonight? Can I put that report away and play a game of cards with my adult children?

Fun means different things to different people. For me, I would never go on a roller coaster. However,  I will do everything I can to get the highest score on the arcade pinball machine. Fun comes along when you least likely expect it. Fun comes along when you are not ready for it.

To lead a balanced life, relieve our stress and spend time with our loved ones, WE NEED TO HAVE MORE FUN.

As Tony Bennett sings,

“You had better have some fun

You ain’t gonna live forever

Before you’re old and gray, feel okay

Have your little fun, son!

Have your little fun”
