I have a lovely view of Lake Lorraine and a great big magnolia tree outside my kitchen window. One afternoon while washing dishes, I watched a mother robin in the tree. When the rain began, she gently settled herself over her hatchlings. As always in the Pacific Northwest, the rain soon become a downpour. The robin stood up in her nest and spread her wings wide. She rocked back and forth a few times, stretching her wings to create an umbrella over the nest. The rains pounded harder, yet she did not move. I watched her in amazement as I continued cleaning my kitchen. My chores, completed, I hesitated to leave the room. The robin was still standing with wings outstretched, protecting her young.
This moment reminded me of how important a place of refuge is. We have a place of refuge in our family, our home and most importantly God. Life’s trials have a way of either slowly drizzling on us or other times fiercely coming down in a torrential downpour. However, regardless of the intensity of life’s storms, God is faithful. We need to take comfort that we have a resting place first and foremost in God as well as our friends and family.
